I've been on the hunt for some maternity clothes lately. Not a lot, mind you; I have some from my time with Clara, but just a little something new to perk up my wardrobe is what I'm looking for.
Let me just say, it's been a little tough this time. WHY?
I think I can be picky when it comes to buying things, but I've lowered my standards considerably since becoming a mom. I've become a lot more conscientious with my time, and as a result, told my perfectionist nature to chill. However, in my opinion, most maternity clothes are still the cheapest fabrics with the quickest (i.e. sloppiest) construction at a higher than normal price. Retailers have you backed into a corner with their less-than adequate selection. In other words, they are a rip-off.
Last pregnancy, almost everything I tried on fit. "Cool," I thought. "This is easy. Room to spare for future belly growth, yet passable in appearance now." Usually it was the price that was my limiting factor.
This time, not so much. Everything is already snug. WHY? I'm pretty much the same size as my last pregnancy. Those clothes still fit. So, is "snug" the style? I'm sorry, but I don't like to see my belly button indent through my shirt. I like to think I'm a little classier than that. I told my mom, "I don't want to wear a bag, but I don't want to wear a glove either." Is that so much to ask, fashion designers??
Truth be told, I've had more luck in the non-maternity section. WHY? I have no idea. In this instance, I have to thank the fashion designers for making longer-length shirts stylish. Thank you for adding pleats near the neckline for a drapey, loose top. The only logical conclusion to this problem: the maternity fashion designers are on maternity leave and all the rest are men.
