I just ordered a new car seat for the baby. With Clara, we borrowed an infant seat from someone we knew, but that seat won't be available to us for the borrowing this time around. The explanation why our Britax Marathon, which we had already belted into the car, wouldn't "work" for our newborn is here. But getting back to the present: I finally bit the bullet and bought a seat. Which one, you ask?
The Chicco Key Fit 30. (Oooh, Ahhhhhh.)
I also bought an extra base so we can have a base in each car.
How did I choose? Mainly, it was rated the highest by Consumer Reports. Plus all the actual reviews from people were positive, and my parents looked at one in person and they were impressed with its features and construction.
Last time around I tried purchasing the Maxi-Cosi Mico (pictured above) and it was backordered at every online store I could find. (That's another reason why we borrowed a car seat.) I wanted the Maxi-Cosi because it was supposed to snap into my stroller base. But this time around I think I'll pass: I've read that there is a recall on them now, which doesn't make me anxious to buy one, even though I think they look nice. I'm not going to worry about the stroller capability, since we were happy using the stroller's bassinet for our walks at the farm.
The previous seat we used with Clara (the one we borrowed) was a Graco SnugRide. I had no complaints with it, and I've heard many people rave about it.
The Chicco I bought is supposed to hold a baby up to 30 pounds. I'm hoping by the time this baby is 30 pounds, Clara will be ready for a booster seat or at least the toddler/booster seat, and this new baby can take over the car seats (yes, plural -- two cars) Clara currently uses.
I hope I've made the best decision. Car seats are not cheap, especially the "good" ones. And I cringe at the thought of the 'car seat graveyard' that will be in our attic once these babes are out of car seats for good.
