Ultrasound Numero Dos

Well, it’s been a little while now, but we’ve had our second ultrasound. I was 19 weeks along at the time, and now I’m 22 weeks. And yes, to answer your forthcoming question, we could have found out if it was a boy or a girl, but we didn’t. For future parents out there like Pat and me, it was extremely tempting to find out. Extremely. One good thing is that the baby’s sex is never recorded on the medical records. So, once you leave the ultrasound room, it’s impossible for someone to “spoil” the surprise.
The hospital recorded the ultrasound on a DVD, which is a cool souvenir, although having the nurse doing the ultrasound talking you through what you are seeing is particularly helpful.
While I’ve been very excited to see the baby’s progress, my mind started to worry right as we were pulling up to the hospital – if there was anything wrong with the baby, I would probably know it momentarily. Thankfully, everything checked out fine. The baby (as of 3 weeks ago) was estimated at 10 oz. I’ve been pregnant for about five months. Only 10 oz?? That’s still pretty small, isn’t it? Thumper has a long way to go to get to 7.5 pounds! The computer’s statistics told us that weight was extremely average – we’re talking 48th percentile average – for this point in the pregnancy. Let me just say, it feels great to be average.
The best part was definitely at the end, when the nurse stopped trying to show us specific parts of the baby and we could just watch the baby in his entirety move as he normally would. We saw him wiggle and stretch which was so exciting. And let me tell you, this kid is a yoga-master. We’re talking full-forward-fold-head-to-the-knees kind of yogi. :-D
